The
Believer Follows Christ …
Showing
Love to Their Neighbor
The order of service we are using today is The Common Service, found on pages 15-25 in the front of the Hymnal. This service strongly emphasizes our Christian roots, history, and worship practices. It is a service of hymns, prayers, readings, and commentary (sermon) which is patterned after the way Jesus, the apostles, and other believers in the first and second century worshiped. It is a Christ-centered order of worship filled with Biblical teaching, praise, and prayer.
OPENING
HYMN: 452

Us Ever Walk with Jesus”
THE CONFESSION OF SINS:

GLORY BE TO GOD: page 16
The announcement of Jesus’ forgiveness establishes peace in the heart. The song in response to this peace reflects the joy of the angels at the birth of the Savior. it gives the Triune God glory, praise, and thanks. Luther said that this ancient song “did not grow, nor was it made, but it came from heaven.” Thanks be to our Holy God for his merciful forgiveness!
PRAYER OF THE DAY:
P:
Almighty God, we thank you for planting in us the seed of your Word.
By your Holy Spirit help us to receive it with joy and to bring forth
fruits in faith and hope and love; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who
lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C:
(sung)
Amen.
OLD TESTAMENT READING:
Deuteronomy
24:17-22
Do not
deprive the alien or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow
as a pledge. Remember that you were
slaves in Egypt and the LORD
your God redeemed you from there. That
is why I command you to do this.
When you are
harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it.
Leave it for the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that the LORD
your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a
second time. Leave what remains for
the alien, the fatherless and the widow. When
you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again.
Leave what remains for the alien, the fatherless and the widow.
Remember that you were slaves in Egypt.
That is why I command you to do this.
THE PSALM:
Psalm 25 - read responsively
P:
To you, O LORD, I
lift up my soul; in you I trust, O my God.
C: Remember,
O LORD,
your great mercy and love, for they are from of old.
P:
Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways;
C: According
to your love remember me, for you are good, O LORD.
P:
All the ways of the LORD
are loving and faithful for those who keep his covenant.
C:
Turn to me and be gracious to me, and take away all my sins.
THE SECOND LESSON: Romans
12:9-21
Love must be
sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to
what is good. Be devoted to one
another in brotherly love. Honor one
another above yourselves. Never be
lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
Share with God's people who are in need.
Practice hospitality.
Bless those
who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice
with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
Live in harmony with one another. Do
not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.
Do not be conceited.
Do not repay
anyone evil for evil. Be careful to
do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If
it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it
is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay,"
says the Lord. On the
contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him
something to drink. In doing this,
you will heap burning coals on his head."
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
VERSE OF THE DAY:
Deuteronomy 30:14
P:
Alleluia. The Word is very
near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.
Alleluia.
C:
(sung) Alleluia!
Alleluia! Alleluia!
THE
GOSPEL
We stand for the reading of the Gospel out of respect and reverence for
our Lord Jesus, upon whom the gospels and the rest of Scripture are based.
THE GOSPEL LESSON:
Luke 10:25-37
(Congregation sings:
"Glory be to you, O Lord!" )
On one
occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus.
"Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal
life?"
"What is
written in the Law?" he replied. "How
do you read it?"
He answered:
"`Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and
with all your strength and with all your mind' ; and, `Love your neighbor
as yourself.' "
"You
have answered correctly," Jesus replied.
"Do this and you will live."
But he wanted
to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
In reply
Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell
into the hands of robbers. They
stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.
A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the
man, he passed by on the other side. So
too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other
side. But a Samaritan, as he
traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.
He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine.
Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care
of him. The next day he took out two
silver coins and gave them to the
innkeeper. `Look after him,' he
said, `and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may
have.'
"Which
of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of
robbers?"
The expert in
the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him."
Jesus told
him, "Go and do likewise."
(Congregation sings:
"Praise be to you, O Christ!" )
THE
NICENE CREED
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
Maker
of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally
begotten of the Father,
God
from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten,
not made, of one being with the Father.
Through
him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,
was
incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.
For
our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He
suffered death and was buried.
On
the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.
He
ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and
His kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who
proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who
in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who
has spoken by the prophets.
We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.
We
acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We
look for the resurrection of the dead,
and
the life of the world to come. Amen.
